When AI Oversteps: A Glimpse into 2025

An unsettling development is unfolding, and it appears Facebook is keeping it under wraps. Allow me to share a firsthand experience.
What we are seeing is the shift to a new paradigm where large corporations deploy AI to perform functions traditionally managed by humans.
Recently, this week, my friend `M` from Germany launched her new Facebook page. As a long-time user of the platform, I can confirm that her page was perfectly normal and well-designed.
However, complications arose when I tried to place Facebook ads for my apps, books, and a friend's six restaurants:
1. Facebook flagged `M` as a BOT.
2. My ads were unanimously REJECTED. Categorized as suspicious with an Invalid Asset (i.e., KNOWN BAD URL) and cited for Unacceptable Business Practices, the message was clear: "Ad rejected. This ad doesn’t comply with our Advertising Policies."
Friends, these were the same ads I've run successfully for years—what changed?
The mystery began to unravel after an exhaustive night on the phone with Facebook, followed by a revealing WebEx call. Adellia, a Meta Ads support representative, inadvertently let slip some crucial information while examining my account. Initially, she speculated that I might have been flagged as spam or that my ads were non-compliant. Yet, these ads had been stable and unchallenged for five years. It was then she hinted at the possibility of their *new system*.
That's when it clicked: 2025 marks the onset of Facebook using AI to scrutinize new user accounts and ads, with what seems to be an alarmingly high rejection rate—possibly over 90%.
Indeed, this year has introduced an AI that indiscriminately blocks new accounts and ads, misidentifying them as bots or policy violators. I estimate this new system’s error detection rate could be as high as 95%.
This isn't an isolated incident. A recent class-action lawsuit filed in the US District Court in Minnesota accuses UnitedHealthcare of substituting AI for real medical professionals to unjustly deny elderly patients care. The lawsuit reveals that more than 90% of these AI-based denials are overturned on appeal.
Tragically, the repercussions of such AI implementations have already proven fatal, as evidenced by the deadly shooting of UnitedHealthcare CEO Brian Thompson by Luigi Mangione.
We are witnessing a disturbing trend where large corporations deploy AI to perform functions traditionally managed by humans—such as evaluating claims, ads, and new user accounts. This shift is not only premature but also profoundly impacts how we are treated as consumers and individuals. Companies must refine their AI technologies rather than hastily and indiscriminately implementing them, forcing customers into arduous battles just to engage in regular transactions.
Welcome to 2025, where the digital transformation might just be outpacing its human overseers.
Let's see if this article is not blocked by AI.
